Twitter has been a remarkable tech success story, and I have blogged about it much here. But today I am going to celebrate its birthday by hitting at its prime weakness. Twitter has done a lousy job of making sense of all the tweets it collects. They all rest on your own servers, for Chrissake.

All tweets ever sent out have to stay live. You should be able to search through them. You should be able to make sense of thousands, millions of tweets at once. Twitter has not handled that part at all well.

Social media has to be more about listening than broadcasting. Broadcasting we were doing fine even with old media. It was the interaction and the listening part that was absent.

By contrast Mark Zuckerberg has done a much better job of pivoting. The guy acts like Facebook competes with itself, and it sure does.

Happy birthday Twitter, but I hope you do some spitting out over the next five years.
