Palki Sharma: Indian Platform, Global Reach

Palki Sharma Upadhyay is one of India’s most prominent journalists, news anchors, and media executives. Known for her articulate delivery, incisive analysis of international affairs, and ability to distill complex global stories into accessible narratives, she has built a career spanning over two decades across print, television, and digital platforms.
Her flagship shows, such as Gravitas on WION and Vantage on Firstpost, have garnered millions of views, particularly for their focus on geopolitics, foreign policy, and an assertive “India-first” perspective on world events.

Early Life and EducationPalki Sharma Upadhyay was born on May 29, 1982, in Pilani, Rajasthan, and raised in Delhi. She comes from a well-to-do family that emphasized education and ambition. Her father is a former Indian cricketer, and her mother is a noted beautician; both parents played key roles in nurturing her interests. She has a sister named Sanchita.
Though her father initially encouraged her to pursue medicine, Palki gravitated toward writing and the English language. She completed her schooling at Loreto Convent, Tara Hall, in Shimla, before earning a Master’s degree in Communication and Journalism from the ICG Institute for Educational Research & Development (now part of IIS University, Jaipur). She also obtained a C1-level French certification from Alliance Française in Delhi.
During college, she began contributing to local newspapers, honing her storytelling skills. She has often described herself as multi-talented, with interests in interior design, cooking, reading (favorites include Indian Summer by Alex von Tunzelmann and Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt), and painting pots. She even launched her own saree brand, Revya, reflecting her passion for fashion and traditional Indian attire. Entry into Journalism and Early CareerPalki’s journalistic journey began remarkably early. In 2002, while still in college, she was approached at an event and offered a position as a news anchor and reporter at Doordarshan (DD News), India’s public broadcaster. Her starting salary was a modest ₹800 per month. She handled regional and national programs, learning the fundamentals of story selection, formatting, and presentation.
In 2004, she transitioned to print journalism as a staff writer at the Hindustan Times, covering civic and social issues, reviewing films, and copy-editing for the Jaipur edition. A year later, in May 2005, she joined CNN-News18 (then CNN-IBN) as an anchor and senior editor. Over the next decade-plus, she hosted news shows, conducted high-profile interviews with politicians, business leaders, activists, and celebrities, and contributed to digital platforms through book reviews and live chats. She was also the first Indian correspondent to cover Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in the United States and reported on Iraqi refugees and Tibetans in India.
In 2007, she received the Best News Reader Award, an early recognition of her on-screen presence. Rise to Prominence at WION: The Gravitas EraPalki joined WION (World Is One News), a multinational English news channel, around 2016–2019 as Managing Editor and prime-time anchor. She created and hosted Gravitas, India’s flagship international news and views program. The show gained massive popularity for its crisp, no-nonsense analysis of global events—from the Russia-Ukraine conflict to geopolitics in Asia and beyond—often achieving millions of views online.
Her coverage emphasized clarity, depth, and an Indian perspective on world affairs, earning her the “Best International News Show” award in English at the News Broadcasting Awards (ENBA) in 2020. She resigned from WION in September 2022 after approximately three years in the top editorial role. Firstpost and Vantage (2023–2026)In early 2023, Palki moved to Network18’s digital platform Firstpost as Managing Editor. She anchored Vantage with Palki Sharma, a weeknight show focused on global news with an Indian lens, alongside programs like Flashback and Between the Lines. These shows became digital hits, compressing intricate international stories into engaging, fact-driven segments that resonated widely on YouTube and social media.

Her tenure at Firstpost further amplified her reach, with Vantage establishing itself as a go-to source for international analysis. She continued to be recognized for stylish on-screen presence (winning “Most Stylish Journalist” at the Lokmat Stylish Awards in 2023) and received the Bharat Asmita Jana Jagaran Shreshta Award for her contributions to mass media.
On January 29, 2026, Palki stepped down as Managing Editor of Firstpost to pursue independent opportunities. Network18 described the decision as “heavy-hearted,” and she remained with the organization through March 2026 for a smooth transition. Reports indicate she plans to launch her own media venture, seeking greater creative control and the ability to shape narratives independently after 25 years in mainstream journalism. Personal LifePalki married fellow journalist Sanket Upadhyay (formerly of NDTV and now an independent storyteller and podcaster) in 2008. The couple has two children: a daughter, Manya Upadhyay, and a son. She has spoken candidly about balancing a demanding career with family life, noting that marriage allowed her more freedom to cover breaking news at odd hours. She lives in a joint family setup and emphasizes showing love and authenticity to her children. Style, Impact, and LegacyPalki Sharma Upadhyay is widely praised for her calm yet commanding presence, meticulous research, and fearless debunking of narratives. Supporters highlight her as a strong, independent voice in Indian media, particularly on foreign affairs. Critics occasionally describe her perspective as overtly nationalistic, but she maintains a commitment to fact-based storytelling and editorial independence.
Beyond journalism, her ventures into design (including the saree brand Revya) underscore a creative side that complements her analytical mind. As she embarks on her next chapter—likely an independent media platform—Palki continues to represent a new generation of Indian journalists who blend global insight with domestic relevance. Her journey from a ₹800-per-month Doordarshan anchor to a digital powerhouse exemplifies resilience, adaptability, and the power of clear communication in an era of information overload.
