Plenty Of Room At The Bottom (Richard Feynman)

"There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom" is a famous 1959 speech by physicist Richard Feynman. Given at a meeting of the American Physical Society at Caltech, the talk challenged scientists to manipulate matter down to the atomic scale, launching the core ideas behind modern nanotechnology.

Core Ideas of the Speech
Feynman talked about a future where humans could control individual atoms. He used simple examples to show how much space we waste by making things too big. [1, 2]
  • Writing on a pin: He asked why we cannot write all the books in the world on the head of a pin. He calculated that all the information in all the books could easily fit in a tiny space the size of a dust particle. [1]
  • Tiny machines: He imagined building tiny, working machines. These small tools could then build even smaller tools, going down step-by-step to the atomic level. [1, 2]

The Challenges
At the end of his talk, Feynman offered two prizes of $1,000 each: [1]
  1. To the first person who made an operating electric motor that could fit inside a cube 1/64 inch on each side.
